Best Time to Book a Cruise When to Book and When to Wait

best time of year to cruise

While there are exceptions and times when a promotion seems lucrative, the best time to book a cruise is when you see a price that fits in your budget and and seems like a good price. If you think it's a good deal, go ahead and pull the trigger on booking it. The best month to cruise the Mediterranean depends on what you're looking for in a vacation. We took a look at factors like weather and sea conditions, festivals and, of course, pricing, to determine which travel dates are right for you.

Caribbean and Bahamas

When considering the best time to go on a cruise, there are multiple factors that have to be accounted for — namely the region you want to sail. The best time for a Caribbean cruise isn’t going to be the same as the best time for a northern Europe or Alaska voyage, for example. Other factors like cost, weather, and crowds might also be things you take into consideration. We breakdown the best time to go on a cruise based on the region as well as several different factors like price, weather, and crowds. Considering the type of passengers you prefer to cruise with can help you choose the best time for your cruise.

Caribbean Cruise in May or June: Hot, Humid and Less Crowded

June through September is also the cheapest time to go to Hawaii on a cruise and coincides with some of the nicest weather in Hawaii. Repositioning cruises happen in late October and early November in the Middle East. If you are looking to get a cheaper fare, those would be the months to consider. Asia is a vast region and has diverse weather patterns and micro-climate, making it important to choose carefully the time you will visit this area.

Why Are You Cruising?

During those months, it's more pleasant to engage in outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking, which are a highlight when visiting places like Panama and Costa Rica. The shoulder seasons will also have fewer passengers and tourists — and you may even have some attractions to yourself in the cities and towns. For example, a seven-night round-trip cruise in November or early December 2024 with Norwegian Cruise Line starts at $1,649.

The first consideration to make when choosing the time for your cruise is why you want to take a cruise at all. Expect more precipitation from June to September and drier conditions between November and April. The months of March, April, May, and November often see the most comfortable temperatures with little precipitation.

November/December

best time of year to cruise

Alaska weather in October is manageable if you pack the right gear and protective clothing. On dry land, bears are more common in May, though not as frequently spotted as they are in peak summer. Finally, the cruise lines are simply looking to fill rooms faster so they can maximize revenue, plan berths and coordinate other logistics a little earlier in the year.

April through early June and September to November are typically when you'll find the cheapest prices. Norwegian Cruise Line has a seven-night itinerary sailing round-trip from Boston in April that starts at $779 per person. Summertime is busy in Canada and New England because of the optimal weather and family vacations.

Spring Cruises

From February onward, the number of visitors swells, as U.S., European and Canadian residents flee the cold. In March and April, spring break revelers descend on destinations like the Riviera Maya, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada. But if your version of fun is a little more mature, opt for the November through January time frame. Summer into early fall is the best time to cruise Hawaii especially June and July.

You'll have options like splash zones for the little ones, monster slides for the adventurers and kids clubs for all ages. Tickets for cruises that set sail between January and March are usually among the most affordable. Temperatures can be warm and enjoyable, but many people find that the humidity can be unpleasant. Rain is also more frequent, which can make excursions and exploring ports of call far less enjoyable.

In April, mountains will still be snowy, and high temperatures will max out in the upper 40s for most cruise ports. The general consensus seems to be that there isn’t one best month for booking cruises. The best deals tend to crop up throughout the period between mid-November and Mid-March. Equally importantly, you'll have to pay the entire fare at once, because cruises booked less than 90 days before sailing require deposit and the full fare to be paid at the same time. Cruises sail Down Under year-round, and there is no cut-and-dry answer as to when the best season is to sail.

However, if you want a deal, the one thing that's certain is you should not sail over the holidays. The best time to cruise to the Caribbean without all the tourists is typically in late fall and between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. You can also avoid the crowds in late April and early May after the spring break rush but before school lets out and summer vacations begin. The best time to cruise to Europe is between spring break and summer vacation (April/May) and in early fall (September/October). Prices are lower and crowds are smaller compared to peak summer months, and temperatures are cool without being simmering or frigid. For cruises visiting ports further north, such as in Japan and China, you will want to sail during spring, summer, and early fall.

If you're seeking a slightly cheaper river cruise in Europe, spring can mean flowers in glorious bloom and milder temperatures. Tulip-viewing itineraries in the Netherlands and Belgium are especially popular. Keep in mind that heavy rains and early-spring flooding can make the rivers swell and the locks impassable.

Pricing will vary, but you can expect 5-night cruises to cost as little as $650 per person or upwards of $1,050 if you cruise over a holiday, such as Christmas or New Year's. The warmest time of the year is between March and May, and the region’s monsoon season falls between June and October. Rainfall does not typically last all day, however; instead, it appears in short, strong bursts. January is the coldest month for Bahamas cruises, although temperatures can be unpredictable. One week may have lows in the mid-50s with high winds and rain, whereas the following week can be 75 degrees with sunny skies.

The months between December and April are conducive for activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and beach-hopping. Gray whales and Humpback whales begin their migration to warmer waters in October and November, so you still have a chance to see them in Alaskan waters in September. There is a chance you will see some snow, so a winter coat, gloves, and a hat are a smart addition to your packing list. Not only is the cracking sound shocking, but the calving also produces a giant wave of water and captivating icebergs. July and August are prime time for viewing glacier calving on an Alaskan cruise.

During the five month season, the weather can vary considerably, so it is important to know which type of weather should be expected before you book your cruise. When school is back in session, it’s much more difficult for many people to set sail. That means cruise lines offer cheaper cruises in an effort to get more people on the ship during these times.

With lows in the 50s, you don’t need to pack a winter coat and hat, but be sure to include warm, wicking layers to keep your temperature steady. They begin migrating from Hawaiian waters in the springtime to feed in the nutrient-rich Alaskan waters. If you have an exterior room and are sensitive to light while sleeping, a sleeping mask will help you rest during these long days.

THE 19 BEST 3 Day Cruises from Jacksonville Prices & Itineraries on Cruise Critic

Per JAXPORT's website, there's free parking available for drivers with a state-issued disabled veterans plate, as well as those with a permanently affixed Florida Toll Exemption decal. Numerous airlines fly into JAX, though, so whether you're a loyal American, Delta, United, or Southwest fan, you should be able to find a flight that meets your needs. Since it's smaller, you may have to connect through an airline's hub, especially if you are flying from a smaller airport. Note that Carnival doesn't offer any transportation from the airport, so you will be responsible for making your own arrangements.

CCL's cruise ship Carnival Elation restarts operations at JAXPORT after drydock refurbishment

The Asian boxshipping trade increased 12% (to nearly 429,000 TEUs). Since we didn't have to collect any luggage, we joined the passport line and were out of the terminal in minutes! There was hardly any traffic leaving, so we were on the road in no time. I appreciated Jacksonville's parking situation compared to ports like Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. Unless you live a few hours away via car, it's advisable that you arrive in Jacksonville the night before your cruise.

Port's first-ever cruise vessel with regularly scheduled service from JAXPORT was MV Zenith - starting turnaround operations in October 2003.

Whether you want a pre-cruise lunch or disembarkation day breakfast, there are a few dining options close by

Despite being a small cruise terminal, boarding Carnival Elation was more chaotic than I anticipated. Since that facility was somewhat aged, it didn't have adequate air conditioning, making it warm while waiting in line for security. There was also a lot of miscommunication amongst port employees, as some told us that there were two lines to enter the building, while we could only find one.

Get the best of a laid-back beach town and a buzzing city when you book a Carnival cruise from the beautiful port of Jacksonville, Florida. The Sunshine State’s largest city has a redeveloped and revitalized downtown, full of upbeat shopping and lively restaurants, bisected by the scenic St. Johns River and its Southbank Riverwalk. Jacksonville is a gateway to the islands of the Bahamas but you’ll also have 20 miles of sandy beach life and endless acres of wildlife parks to enjoy before you board your Carnival cruise from Jacksonville. In 2017, JAXPORT's total vehicle throughput was 693,000 units (record year). By volume, the port is the USA's second-largest vehicle-handling port. JAXPORT serves 3 major auto processing companies (AMPORTS, "Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics", Toyota) and offers international service from 13 of the world’s largest Ro-Ro carriers.

Jaxport provides secure parking for Jacksonville cruise passengers. The well-lit and secured parking space on the Jaxport property is located near the Cruise Terminal building. Carnival cruise ships depart from Jaxport Cruise Terminal, an easily accessible location with ample parking, right off I-295. There are also small ship cruises out of Jacksonville to the historic Southern coast and to Florida rivers.

CRUISES FROM JACKSONVILLE

Cruises from Jacksonville journey all over the world from the Bahamas and the Caribbean to Hawaii, Alaska and beyond. Many major cruise lines depart from the Jacksonville port so feel free to browse and research destinations, cruise lines and deals below. On March 4, 2019, JAXPORT's Board of Directors approved a 25-year lease deal with SSA Marine (port terminal operator) for development and management of the container terminal at Blount Island. The USD 238,7 million facility (SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal) will have deepwater berths and capacity to handle larger boxships (even when fully-loaded). In November 2017, JAXPORT started the construction of a new car terminal for processing and storage of new (foreign- and USA-made) vehicles. The new Dames Point Marine Terminal will increase by 25% port’s vehicle-handling capacity.

The surprising takeaway from a recent study on the best time to cruise to Alaska

The cruise line will homeport in Jacksonville from November to April every year through 2028. In the late 1800s, oil tycoon Henry Flagler developed St. Augustine in an attempt to fulfill his vision of establishing an American Riviera along Florida's eastern shores. Although this "golden era" ended in the early 1900s, Flagler's legacy remains. Explore historic ruins, unique architecture, and the narrow streets of a city once used as a remote outpost by the Spanish Empire. Travel along one of the most impressive stretches of inland waterways in the United States, the Tolomato River. Witness many spectacular sites, including a rare glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean, visible over the Barrier Islands.

Although you may not have as many ship options compared to itineraries departing from South Florida, it is convenient for those who may not want to drive the extra five hours to Miami. Plus, since it's a smaller port, you will not have to deal with as much traffic. Take in the beautiful weather of northern Florida as you disembark from your tour of the South. Reflect upon the wonderful time had and the new friends made as you start your journey home. Or stay a day or two longer to experience all that Jacksonville has to offer.

Future expansion will build beyond the five portals, including the construction of a water park. Calypso Cove is the name of an adult-friendly area coming to Carnival’s Celebration Key on Grand Bahama island when it opens in summer 2026. The site will also have a south-facing, mile-long beachfront expanse and a massive freshwater inland lagoon that the line says is the largest in the Bahamas and Caribbean. It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon.

Located just a few minutes away on Zoo Parkway are Wendy's and Dunkin Donuts Express, with the latter being located inside the Pilot Travel Center. When I stopped by for a post-cruise coffee before my drive back to North Carolina, I was a tad disappointed. Finally, if you are flying into Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), the best way to reach the terminal is to hire a rideshare, as it's only about 11 miles, or 25 minutes, away. If, however, you are renting a car, you will leave the airport via Airport Road and head east on I-95.

In May 2019, Carnival Ecstasy assumed Elation's 4-5-day itinerary program. When combined with the TEUs handled at port's private terminals, 1,3+ million TEU units are moved through JAXPORT annually, ranking Jacksonville Florida’s largest containership port. Asian container shipping volumes in 2016 grew 19% (nearly 400,000 TEUs).

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Carnival Cruise Line has released another round of updates on what travelers can expect when its new private destination Grand Bahama Celebration Key opens. However, if you are ever dissatisfied with any aspect of our service or our Web site, pleaseclick hereto tell me about it. I will respond as quickly as possible, and always within 24 hours. In February 2005, during the Super Bowl XXXIX, JAXPORT housed 4 floating hotels, with a total of 3500 staterooms for the football fans in addition to all the onboard nightclubs, restaurants, bars and cafes. Something I didn't think about, however, is that rolling heavy suitcases down the steep gangway was more difficult than I thought. If I ever cruise out of Jacksonville again, I will take advantage of the cruise line's standard disembarkation, in which you leave your suitcases in the hall the night before.

THE 16 BEST Celebrity Cruises to Transatlantic with Prices 2024 & 2025 on Cruise Critic

While the pool can feel hectic on sunny days, the Lawn Club on Deck 15 provides a lush alternative. Although Celebrity has monetized some of the best spots -- the hut-like Alcoves are rented by the day -- there is still room for people to enjoy the greenery and play mini-golf or bocce ball. The Hot Glass Studio is up here as well; if you want to take a class, book as soon as you board. The Sunset Bar at the back of the ship is one of the best sailaway points. Lowest pricing is based on our 3rd party pricing supplier and valid as of April 22nd, 2024.

Night Alaska Northbound GlacierDetails

We don't use the app, so we fill out a paper which has you indicate time of departure. This paper usually comes to the cabin a couple or 3 days before debarkation day. We found many to be very friendly and engaging and we joined several other couples for entertainment offerings or dinner. The "dress code" in the MDR was not enforced and some wore clothing not in keeping with the Smart Casual or Evening Chic requirements (more like suggestions it appeared).

Night Italian Riviera & France CruiseDetails

But that is a topic of some disagreement so I won't belabor that observation any further. The ship has turned tendering -- that often unpleasant experience where you have to board a small boat to get to a port -- into an infinitely more pleasant experience. The Magic Carpet is a tennis court-sized moveable deck, kitted out with an open-air lounge and bar. From there, it's a breeze to get onto the tenders, or you can stay to get a drink and watch others get on and off -- talk about people-watching. Celebrity Apex ship is part of the current revolution for Celebrity, which for years has pushed the bar when it comes to design and delight.

Some of the more popular venues, such as Café al Bacio, Sushi on Five and the ice-covered Martini Bar, are located off the Grand Foyer; it's always a bustling area and sometimes can lack seating at prime hours. Make sure you check out the signature live tree when you use the elevators. Reflection stands out with its exceptional variety of cabins, including its beautiful suites.

I contacted Celebrity and they told us it was probably an oversight, but still left me with a negative impression. I asked how I can prevent being charged erroneously in the future, and the Celebrity rep suggested having my room steward come take an inventory of our fridge before we leave the room. I’ve never had this happen on any other cruise, nor have I ever had to have my fridge inventoried in the mayhem of departure day.

How much does it cost to go on Celebrity Reflection?

The cabins on Celebrity Solstice are functional, with choices for different traveling groups. One thing we missed were outlets and USB ports near the bed, now a necessity on newer cruise ships. Purists who love real walk-out balconies will be happy with the choices on Solstice; the ship does not have the infinite balcony cabins that dominate the Edge-class vessels.

Night Western Europe Transatlantic

We have not been on Equinox but have been on Solstice (twice), Silhouette, and Eclipse. We had one poor experience - on Solstice in September this year. The Silhouette cruise (a TA in April this year) was fantastic - like definitely one of the best ever. On Silhouette, we spoke to the senior officers many times and the F&B Manager spent a lot of time with passengers in all of the dining facilities - they weren't cursory conversations, he listened intently.

On ships without a Lawn Club, relaxing by the pool or in the Solarium is popular, as are the once- or twice-per-cruise Rooftop film and dinner events. At night, Celebrity showcases everything from Vegas-style production shows to comedians and cabaret, drawing a crowd each time. We booked a balcony guarantee and immediately were assigned a "sweet sixteen" balcony on deck 6. The room was well-located although from about 9pm until 11pm we occasionally experienced "bass" thumping from music either from the late theater show or music on the pool deck. It wasn't so loud or disturbing to be a problem but others more sensitive to such may wish to select a different location onboard for their cabin.

Would love to see a comparison or link here to your upcoming cruises. We'd shy away from booking a balcony cabin with an obstructed view on Deck 6, however, as the lifeboats/tenders dominate your field of vision (and inhibit good picture taking). We also heard that forward cabins were especially susceptible to noise from the foghorn on an Alaska itinerary. Holding 2,850 guests at double occupancy, Celebrity Solstice flourishes wherever it is deployed, be that Australia, Asia or Alaska.

The cabin was cleaned twice daily with chocolates on the pillows on nights one and two only. There was a substantial amount of rust on the balcony and visible on many of the balcony supports above us and visible from windows in the Oceanview cafe. However, public areas were kept very clean and there was always somebody mopping a floor or wiping down the stairway railings. Still, you won't go hungry on Celebrity Solstice and the main dining room, the glass-filled  Grand Epernay, is an impressive home base.

Furthermore, Cruise Critic makes no guarantees for availability of prices advertised on our site. Listed prices may have blackout dates, qualifications or restrictions. Shore excursions are not covered by cruise fares, nor are gratuities, spa and salon services and some fitness classes. Celebrity Apex shines when it comes to dining and nightlife, striking the right balance between fun, flair and familiar.

It's also a good ship for girlfriend getaways -- so many opportunities to dance! There are also a variety of special meals that almost appear like pop-ups in your daily planner that are special interest to foodies. Two are based in Murano -- the Chef's Table menu with Boulud dishes, and also a special Veuve Cliquot pairing meal. We also didn't act fast enough to snag a spot at a special extra-fee Alaska Seafood Shack lunch in the Tuscan Grill. If long epicurean feasts are your vacation jam, make sure you look for these, either before you go or as soon as you get onboard. Storage can seem tight at first, but if you're having trouble fitting everything, look up over the beds.
